Jasper Car Chase Through Yards Ends in Crash

On February 27th, 2023, at approximately 4:30 PM, the Jasper Police Department was dispatched to Walmart regarding a theft that had just occurred. Walmart Asset Protection provided dispatch with the name of the male suspect and a description of the vehicle he was driving. The officers were familiar with the suspect due to multiple previous encounters and arrests. The suspect was located inside his vehicle in Schnuck’s parking lot. However, when officers attempted to make contact with him, he fled in his vehicle. The vehicle then led police on a short pursuit through several backyards and back out to Newton St., where he continued to run southbound on Newton St. Upon reaching the area of Culvers on Newton St., the male subject lost control of his vehicle and collided into a city utility pole. Officers approached the vehicle and located the male subject unconscious inside. They attempted to gain entry but were unable to do so due to the damage caused by the accident. Ultimately, the male subject had to be extricated from the vehicle. Memorial EMS and Jasper Fire arrived and rendered care to the male subject, who was then transported to Memorial Hospital. The male subject’s identity is not being released at this time, pending family notifications. He will be facing numerous criminal charges, and more information will be released at a later time.
