In response to ongoing parent concerns, the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation has recently restricted or removed a dozen titles from its shelves. The decision follows thorough evaluations by staff members, who considered factors such as mature content, including profanity and sexual content. Resources like Common Sense Media, the School Library Journal, and Goodreads were utilized during the evaluation process. Some of the affected works include books by authors Ellen Hopkins, David Levithan, Sarah J. Maas, Megan McCafferty, Julia Scheeres, and Elizabeth Scott. Notably, starting next year, local schools will publish their book catalogs online, providing guardians with the opportunity to review available materials. While the move has gained support from some, not all individuals agree with the practice of banning or restricting books for students.
