In an effort to reduce fatalities in work zones, the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) plans to introduce speed cameras next year. The initial deployment of cameras will target four specific work zones and will only operate when workers are present. How does it function? If drivers exceed the posted speed limit by 11 miles per hour or more, a camera will capture an image of their license plate. Initially, offenders will receive a warning through the mail for their first violation. However, repeat offenders will be subject to fines. These measures were prompted by approximately 30 fatalities and numerous injuries in work zone accidents last year. INDOT aims to assess the effectiveness of the program and provide an update by the summer of 2028.
