Sergeant Johnathan R. Wells has made history in Martin County as the first Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) in Martin County. The Martin County Sheriff’s Office proudly announced his achievement following his successful completion of the DRE training program on March 8. Sergeant Wells underwent over 120 hours of intensive training. The program spanned three weeks, with the initial two weeks conducted at the Fishers Police Department and the final week in Jacksonville, Florida. This training helps to identify various drugs and drug categories, as well as detect signs of impairment in drivers under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol. DREs are a highly specialized unit, representing only about 1% of the law enforcement population. Indiana currently has ~220 DREs, with Sergeant Wells being the first from the Martin County Sheriff’s Office.
