An off-duty Indiana State Police sergeant made two separate DUI arrests in two counties over the weekend while driving his department-issued vehicle. On Friday, May 2, Sgt. Michael Allen responded to a single-vehicle crash near French Lick after hearing the call over local dispatch. The driver, 63-year-old Michael Sheets of Anderson, showed signs of impairment and was taken to IU Health in Paoli for a chemical test. Officers also reportedly found a suspected controlled substance on Sheets. He was later transported to the Orange County Jail and charged with OVWI and possession of a legend drug. The next day, May 3, Sgt. Allen observed a pickup truck make an illegal U-turn on I-64 near Saint Croix in Perry County. He pulled over the vehicle and identified the driver as 24-year-old Kirk Steinhart of Jasper, who also showed signs of impairment. Steinhart was taken to the Perry County Jail for testing and was charged with OVWI. Both individuals are being held on bond. The Indiana State Police remind the public that all suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
