Sandra Elaine Simmons, age 78, of Loogootee, passed away peacefully on Saturday June 7th, at Memorial Hospital and Health Care, in Jasper, surrounded by her family.
She was born on February 5, 1947, in Washington, to Edmund “Ed” Russell Pendley and Laverne (Potts) Wenzel.
Sandy married John S. Simmons on November 10, 1965, and they shared nearly 57 years of marriage.
Known for her warm he-art, generous spirit, and unwavering faith, Sandy was a dedicated homemaker and the faithful wife of Pastor John S. Simmons, while he served as pastor of Mt. Zion Wesleyan Church for over 35 years. Her strength and steadfast support were a foundation for their ministry and a source of encouragement to their church family.
Sandy spent many years working at the Alco Dime Store, in Loogootee. She later served as a teacher’s aide in the Loogootee School System. Sandy had a love for traveling and going on vacation, always excited for the next adventure. She especially loved trying new restaurants and had a knack for picking the best places to eat, something she liked to share with her family and friends. She will be deeply missed by all that knew her.
She is survived by her children, Stephen “Steve” Simmons, Lori Moore, and John “JD” Simmons, all of Loogootee;, grandchildren, Alli Squires, Ryan Simmons, Mandi Simmons, Jake Simmons, and Monica Carnell; great-grandchildren, Leeland and Hunter Bays and Karri Prysock; sibling, Margaret “Margie” (Gary) Eltzroth, and several nieces and nephews.
Sandy was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and an infant brother, Edmund Pendley.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, June 13th, at 12:00 p.m. at Mt. Zion Wesleyan Church. Visitation will be held on Friday, June 13th, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any memorial contributions be donated to Mt. Zion Wesleyan Church in memory of Sandra and John Simmons.
