A Shoals couple is bringing new life to a historic site and boosting local tourism with riverside camping and kayak rentals just in time for the Shoals Catfish Festival. Audrey and Chad Gibson have purchased the 1858 Star Milling Co. building and are launching Star Mill Gathering Place. Phase one includes two full-hookup campsites and canoe/kayak rentals with trips along the East Fork of the White River. They hope to open by July 3. Phase two, expected in 2026, will feature an event space, food and drink offerings, and a local goods store. The Gibsons, Martin County natives, say their project is rooted in community pride and Shoals’ potential. Kayaks and canoes were delivered last week, and river trips may begin this week.
