The City of Washington is exploring new ways to improve bicycle and pedestrian safety, thanks to a recent partnership with Indiana University’s Center for Rural Engagement. As more residents rely on bikes for transportation, especially to work, local leaders are focused on addressing safety concerns, from pothole-ridden roads to the lack of designated bike paths. A proposed cycling corridor to the new downtown Commons sparked broader discussions about infrastructure gaps. Graduate students from IU’s O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs worked with city officials to develop recommendations. Their work included drafting a “Complete Streets” ordinance, mapping safer travel routes, and suggesting low-cost improvements. City officials say improvements will likely roll out in phases.
