The Indiana Department of Health has confirmed that mosquito samples in Daviess County tested positive for West Nile virus. Local health officials are urging residents to take precautions to reduce the risk of mosquito-borne illness. The Daviess County Health Department is increasing treatments in affected areas. Residents are advised to use EPA-approved insect repellents, wear long sleeves and pants, and avoid mosquito exposure between dusk and dawn when the Culex species is most active. Officials also recommend reducing standing water around homes by cleaning gutters, emptying containers, and maintaining landscaping. Most people infected with WNV show no symptoms or only mild flu-like illness, but severe cases can affect the nervous system and may be fatal, especially in older adults or those with weakened immune systems.
