
Former Washington Hatchet boys basketball coach Gene Miiller was honored with the Sagamore of the Wabash Award during Friday night’s Homecoming game, the highest distinction given by the Governor of Indiana. Miiller retired last season after a 50-year career in high school basketball, compiling 762 wins and 383 losses. He coached at Kankakee Valley, Vincennes Lincoln, and Lafayette Jeff before leading Washington’s program for 20 years. His career includes 21 conference championships, 29 sectional titles, 8 regionals, 4 semi-states, a state runner-up finish in 1984 with Vincennes Lincoln, and three Class 3A state championships with Washington in 2008, 2010, and 2011. A member of the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame and Wabash College Hall of Fame, Miiller was also recognized with the John Wooden Legacy Award in 2024. He remains the second-winningest active coach in Indiana history.
