He was born on July 31, 1948, in Washington, Indiana to Noble and Nora (McCrary) Matteson.

He was a beloved father, grandfather, brother and friend. He was known for his quick wit, good-hearted nature, and willingness to help anyone in need. Joe touched countless lives with his kindness and his sense of humor.

Joe’s faith was central to his life. He loved the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and was a devoted member of Trinity Gospel Tabernacle in Washington. He found joy in reading his Bible and sharing his faith through the way he lived—always with love, laughter, and compassion.

Throughout his working years, Joe was a talented painter at Charlie Rose Construction and worked at McCord’s and later served faithfully as a maintenance worker for the Washington Housing Authority. No matter the task, Joe worked hard and took pride in doing things well.

Sports were another great passion in his life. Joe cheered on the St. Louis Cardinals, the Indiana Pacers, and the IU Hoosiers. He also gave back to the community by playing softball for McCord’s and coaching youth baseball for many years, teaching not only the game but also valuable lessons of teamwork, respect, and perseverance.

Joe also loved the outdoors, country music, and the simple joys of life.

He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his legacy of faith, humor, and love will continue to inspire those blessed to have shared in his life.

Joe is preceded in death by his parents, his siblings, Barbara (Bob) Charles, Dave (Carol) Matteson, Dorothy Grannan, infants- Dana Louise, and Jesse Odell, and his nephew, Kevin Charles.
