Vital Farms, a Texas-based egg producer known for its ethical and sustainable farming practices, will open its first company-owned farm in Lawrence County later this year. The company purchased 50 acres in Mitchell to house about 20,000 pasture-raised hens, part of a $250 million investment in Indiana that includes a major egg washing and packing facility in Seymour slated to open in 2027, creating 400 jobs and supporting 165 family farms. The Mitchell site, one of several planned “Accelerator Farms,” will serve as a research hub for sustainable agriculture. The farm will employ three full-time staff and receive operational support from Vital Farms’ broader network. Company officials said Lawrence County was chosen for its strong agricultural roots and proximity to Seymour, where Vital Farms is expanding its Midwestern operations.
