Knox County Commissioner Kellie Streeter is urging residents to help stop a recent rash of road sign thefts and vandalism in the Oaktown area after six stop signs were stolen and nine others were knocked down Tuesday night. Streeter warned that while some may see sign theft as a harmless prank, stealing or damaging road signs, especially stop or warning signs, can lead to serious or fatal accidents. The incidents also carry a significant cost to taxpayers, diverting funds and manpower from critical road maintenance. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, Knox County 911/Central Dispatch, or the Knox County Highway Department at 812-882-2884. Streeter said the ongoing vandalism problem in the Oaktown area has gone on for years and must be addressed.
