Two rare tortoises stolen from the Indianapolis Zoo earlier this month have been found safe and unharmed in Falls Park in Pendleton, according to police. Around 4 p.m. Monday, park visitors discovered a cardboard box near the falls behind the park’s museum with a note referencing the Indianapolis Zoo. Inside were the missing Egyptian and Northern Spider tortoises, both listed as critically endangered species. Police quickly responded and took custody of the animals. Zoo officials later confirmed their identities through microchip scans. The Capitol Police continue to investigate the theft with assistance from the Pendleton Police Department, FBI, U.S. Department of Agriculture Office of Inspector General, and the Indianapolis Zoo. No arrests have been announced.
