Beginning January 1, more than 500,000 Hoosiers who use SNAP benefits will no longer be able to buy sugary drinks or candy under Indiana’s new Smart SNAP program. The change — authorized by Governor Mike Braun’s executive order and approved by the USDA — aims to address Indiana’s high obesity rates and low fruit and vegetable consumption. Sugary drinks such as soda, energy drinks, sweetened teas, and sports drinks will be prohibited, while milk-based beverages, 100% fruit or vegetable juice, unsweetened tea, and products like Pedialyte remain eligible. Candy items including chocolate bars, marshmallows, fruit strips, popcorn, and mints will also be restricted, though ice cream, chips, and fresh fruit are still allowed. Retailers must update checkout systems and complete compliance steps before the rules take effect.
