Widespread Closures, Travel Warnings Issued Across Area Amid Winter Storm and Extreme Cold

The City of Washington will be closed today except for essential city workers, who will report to work due to the weather emergency. All departments will reopen on Tuesday, January 27th, with regular hours, and the Monday council meeting will be rescheduled.  There will be no trash pickup today.  

Due to the weather, the regular January meeting of the Odon Town Council that was scheduled for today will be postponed until Monday, February 2, 2026, at 6pm at the Odon Community Building. The Odon Town Hall will also be closed today, and there will be no regularly scheduled trash pickup on Monday. And the Elnora Town Council Meeting scheduled for tonight has also been cancelled this evening.

Daviess County Commissioners have closed the Daviess County Courthouse and all non-essential county government offices.

The City of Loogootee issued a disaster emergency declaration for travel.  Everyone is asked to not travel unless it is an emergency and allow crews to continue cleanup.  Martin County officials have declared a seven-day disaster emergency due to severe winter weather. A warning travel advisory is in effect, restricting travel to emergency personnel only. Residents are urged to stay off the roads and follow directions from public safety officials. Emergency services and essential workers are exempt, and county emergency plans are now active.

Knox County officials have issued a local disaster declaration. This will be signed and filed at the courthouse today. A “Warning” level travel advisory can only be issued after a local disaster emergency has been declared.  Only emergency personnel should be on roads today.  

All area schools are closed for the day.  Please check with your school to see if it will be e-learning or a true snow day.  All VU classes are also cancelled for the day today.  

Daviess Community Hospital clinics will be closed Monday, January 26, due to winter weather to ensure the safety of patients and staff. The hospital will remain open, and scheduled surgeries will continue as planned. Patients will be contacted directly if any changes to care are necessary. Hospital officials thank the community for their understanding and urge everyone to stay safe.

Good Samaritan will close all outpatient services Monday, January 26, due to weather and road conditions, including Same Day Surgery, physician offices, therapy clinics, and other outpatient departments. The Convenient Care Clinic will be open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. for urgent needs. The emergency department and inpatient units will remain open 24/7. Updates will be posted on Good Samaritan’s website and Facebook page.

There will be no production across all shifts at each of the MasterBrand Dubois County facilities.  Office and leadership staff are also not expected to report to work.  Please call the weather hotline for updates.

The Daviess County YMCA is closed for the day.  Senior and Family Services are closed for the day; no meals on wheels.  Many businesses and offices are also closing for the day too, including several local banks and others too numerous to mention.  If you had an appointment or were planning to travel to a business, be sure to call first and make sure they are open.  

The Daviess County CEO Evening with Young Entrepreneurs has been postponed tonight.  The new date will be Monday, February 23, at Champion Lanes.  

Ride Solution and the Washington City Bus will not be in operation today. Senior and Family Services will be closed with no activities, meals on wheels, or transportation today and Tuesday as well.

From the National Weather Service, an Extreme Cold Warning: dangerously cold wind chills as low as 20 to 25 below zero are expected to continue until 11 AM today.  For the Cold Weather Advisory, it will continue to noon Tuesday. The dangerously cold wind chills as low as 20 below zero could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes. Wind chill values can lead to hypothermia with prolonged exposure.  Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, are slick and hazardous. Plan on slippery road conditions if you have to travel; if you don’t have to travel, stay in.
