The Indiana State Department of Agriculture is reopening its no-cost soil sampling program for farmers within Indiana’s portion of the Mississippi River Basin. The Mississippi River Basin Soil Sampling Program provides producers with free soil testing to help guide nutrient management decisions.  Eligible land includes row crop fields, pastures, hay, and specialty crops. Priority will be given to landowners with 100 acres or less enrolled, fields that have never been sampled, or those not tested within the past four years. Hobby gardens and private lawns are not eligible. Sign-ups open February 16 and run through April 8, or until funds are exhausted. Farmers can apply online through ISDA’s website or by emailing soilsampling@isda.in.gov.
