Born on January 20, 1929, in Shoals, IN, to Cresy and Mae “Collins” Evans, Lavena’s life was a testament to her loving, kind, and generous spirit.

Lavena and her family moved to Palmyra Township, where they began their family’s farm. Lavena achieved her academic aspirations when she graduated from Fritchton High School in 1946 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in nursing from St. Anthony Hospital in Terre Haute, IN, in 1952. Throughout her career, Lavena made significant contributions to the field of nursing, initially moving to Indianapolis to join the Carmelite Monastery as a cloistered nun for 18 yrs. Her journey in healthcare then led her to the VA Hospital in Indianapolis and later to Roseburg, OR, where she dedicated 20 years to caring for veterans before returning to Indiana in 1990.

On November 8, 1992, Lavena married her beloved husband, Ray Wampler, at St. John’s Lutheran Church. Their love blossomed over an enduring 25-year marriage until his passing. In addition to her parents and husband, Lavena was preceded in death by her siblings, Izetta Edmondson, Esther McCracken, and Cresy Evans Jr.

Lavena’s life was rich with diverse interests and achievements, including becoming a self-trained beekeeper. She had a boundless curiosity, and her position as a nurse led her to meet new people and travel to Europe, experiences that enriched her understanding and love for the world.

Her love for reading, gardening, and bird watching created endless moments of joy, and nothing brought her more peace than a leisurely walk among the flowers. Lavena’s unwavering faith and active participation at St. John’s Lutheran Church highlighted her commitment to her spiritual life.

Lavena’s legacy is carried on by her caring nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. Her final years were spent at The Legends in Washington, IN, where her life was celebrated daily by the best care and attention from the staff. Her caregivers, Brenda Hobbs (Stan) of Oaktown, IN, and Peggy Williams (Tracy) of Washington, IN, will fondly remember Lavena as a true friend and wonderful Aunt. A sincere thank you is extended to all those from Heart to Heart Hospice of Jasper In who helped Lavena in her final days.
