As Severe Weather Preparedness Week comes to a close, Shake Broadcasting meteorologist Jesse Walker is reminding residents to make sure their families have a plan in place before storms arrive. Walker discussed severe weather safety during an interview on Focus on the Community, which airs Saturday morning on WAMW. He explained that many people still confuse weather alerts, noting that a watch means conditions are favorable for severe weather, while a warning means severe weather has been spotted and people should take cover immediately. Walker said the safest place during a tornado warning is the lowest level of a home, such as a basement, or a small interior room away from windows. He also warned that flooding is often the most dangerous weather threat locally, urging drivers to remember the message “turn around, don’t drown” when encountering water on roadways. Looking ahead, Walker said Indiana is entering the peak period for severe weather, which typically runs from March through June, and this spring could be especially active as the region comes out of a La Niña weather pattern. The full interview will air Saturday morning on Focus on the Community on WAMW.
