Sheila “Harms” Dent, a cherished matriarch and loving soul, passed away on March 11, 2026, in Newburgh, IN, at the age of 71. Born on March 30, 1954, in Mount Carmel, IL, Sheila cultivated a life that was rich with laughter, kindness, and love.
Sheila’s heartbeat was her family, a family that expanded across generations. She leaves behind her children, Mysti Marsh (David), Dustin Dent (Shannon Sander), and Holly Smith (Jason). Sheila’s legacy will continue to thrive through the joy and love she instilled in her twelve grandchildren: Dakota Dent, Lexee Dent, Jena Pauw, John Pauw IV, Jager Dent, Denna Pauw, Austin Skelton, Michele Marsh, Melissa Marsh, Chelsie Lester, Caleb Lester, and Connor Lester, who will miss her deeply, as will her seven great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. Sheila also leaves behind her brothers, Philip Harms, David Harms, Curtis Harms, and Wes Harms; her sister, Tresa Brooker; her brothers-in-law, Randal Smith and Henry Miley; her uncles, Bobby Dyke, Billy Dyke, and Don Harms; and her aunt, Wanda Hamilton.
Preceding her in death were her beloved husband, Chad Dent, whom she married on May 18, 1974; her parents, Wendell and Wanda “Dyke” Harms; and her sisters-in-law, Loretta Miley and Bonita Smith. Sheila’s family finds solace in knowing that she has been reunited with them in eternal rest.
Sheila not only nourished the bodies but also the spirits of those around her with her cooking expertise. Growing up, Sheila learned to cook, leading to a career as the proprietor and chef of her own restaurant. She delighted her patrons with her culinary dishes; her homemade noodles were the best in Indiana. The warmth within her restaurant’s walls was just an extension of Sheila’s own warmth, making all who entered feel like family.
Her passion for life was evident in all she did, from crocheting beautiful creations to the care and detail she put into her crafts. A member of the Bicknell French Club, Sheila enjoyed community gatherings and was a friend to all she met. Her open-hearted nature left a mark on the hearts of those she met, embodying a free spirit that radiated love and acceptance.
Sheila’s home was an embodiment of her spirit, filled with the laughter of her children and grandchildren, the smells of her cooking, and an atmosphere of boundless love. From the time they could reach, Sheila passed her love and skills to her family, making homemade candies, fudge, and rolled-out cookies with them as often as she could. To have known Sheila was to know kindness —a woman who saw no strangers, only friends she hadn’t yet met.
The void left by Sheila’s passing is immeasurable, but her influence lives on through the countless lives she touched with her generous heart and nurturing presence. As we honor Sheila’s memory, we embrace her legacy of unconditional love, a legacy that will never fade. Sheila will be profoundly missed; however, the love she instilled will be a guiding light forever.
There will be a celebration of life held on Saturday, May 2, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at the French Club in Bicknell, IN.
