For only the second time in the storied history of Washington Hatchets basketball, the Old Gold and Black will be led by a former Hatchets player. Washington’s school board officially named Alex Boyd as the head coach of the Hatchets. Boyd has coached at several levels in the Hatchets program since he graduated from WHS and says he is proud of being named Washington’s head coach.
In other personnel business, the board accepted notice of the retirement of veteran elementary teacher Julie Wadsworth. The Board also accepted the resignations of elementary teacher Gabriela Abaunza Cardozo, Jr. high art teacher Austin Ghirardelli, Jr. high math teacher Anna Mendel, and instructional assistant Kaitlyn Mize. The Board also approved a leave of absence for Bailey Dearwester.
In addition to Boyd’s appointment, the Board approved the hiring of Ashlyn Krigbaum as the high school guidance counselor and Chelsea Bice as an instructional assistant. The board also designated ten faculty members as IREAD Summer School remediation teachers.
The Board also heard a presentation from Brandt Schuckman highlighting the goals and future plans for the agriculture program at WHS. Schuckman presented plans to enlarge and expand the Ag program at Washington High School. Schuckman told the board that financial support to help the FFA and Ag programs would be provided through Cooper’s Fund, which was established with the Community Foundation in memory of the Schuckmans’ son, Cooper.
In other business, the board approved an overnight trip for the WHS BPA to the National Leadership Conference in Nashville and the BETA Club’s overnight Habitat for Humanity Awareness trip. The Board also approved the sale of a sliver of ground running along SR 57 in front of the junior high and upper elementary schools. INDOT purchased the land in preparation for a refurbishing project on SR 57 scheduled to take place in the next two to five years.
The Board also honored the April Employees of the Month. This month the Washington Schools honored bus driver Steve Tolliver, WHS English teacher Sydney Huff, and food service site manager at the primary school Kim Wood.
