Indiana drivers speeding through highway construction zones will now face fines, as the state begins enforcing penalties through automated speed cameras. After nearly a year of testing, the Indiana Department of Transportation is activating the enforcement phase. Speed cameras were first tested on I-70 in 2023 and later relocated to a work zone on I-465 and I-69 near Indianapolis. Since January, INDOT has issued over 90,000 warning notices to speeding drivers without fines. Now, drivers caught going 11 miles per hour or more over the posted limit will receive a warning for their first offense. A second offense will carry a $75 fine, and each subsequent violation will result in a $150 fine. The speed camera program was authorized by state lawmakers in 2023 as a safety measure to protect highway workers.
