As Memorial Day weekend approaches, Indiana Conservation Officers are urging residents to prioritize water safety throughout the summer season. To help prevent accidents, officers recommend discussing water hazards with family before outings, always going with a buddy, and letting someone know your plans. They also advise avoiding flooded or fast-moving waterways, wearing life jackets, and keeping a close watch on children. Boaters are reminded to designate a sober operator. Operating a motorboat or personal watercraft while intoxicated (blood alcohol level of 0.08% or higher) is illegal in Indiana. When boating, assess water levels, reduce speed in unfamiliar areas, and be alert to unusual water conditions to prevent accidents and protect shorelines. Life jackets should be U.S. Coast Guard-approved, in good condition, and properly fitted.
