The Daviess County Commissioners met Tuesday morning and approved a request to allow West Boggs Park to apply for the Being for Others Grant. The grant funds would help pay for re-seeding areas of the West Boggs Golf Course that had significant die-off of grass. Park Superintendent Nathan Rihm told the Commissioner that West Boggs Park has more than 60,000 individual visitors each year, which is about 15,000 more than the combined population of Daviess and Martin Counties. In other business, the commissioners gave approval to a 3-year contract with DeBra-Kuemple Maintenance for maintenance work at the jail; approved a facilities use agreement to use Bethel South Church as a polling location in next year’s elections; and approved the appointments of Darin Steiner and Carrie Alford to terms on the Daviess Community Hospital Board.
The commissioners also heard a report from Highway Superintendent Chris Winkler. Winkler told the commissioners that the bridge project is on schedule, with paving the deck scheduled for Wednesday, weather permitting. Winkler also said the Highway Department is replacing current school zone signs with signs that are a brighter and more reflective yellow. The commissioners approved a request from Winkler to allow highway workers to use a floating vacation day. Winkler also asked the commissioners to look into providing highway workers with bright, reflective rain jackets as a safety measure when working to clear storm damage. Winkler also told the commissioners that the Highway Department is investigating changing the stop pattern at the Old 50/County Road 900 E intersection.
In a report on the courthouse renovation, Commissioner Mike Keith said that the circuit court has moved back into the courthouse and that the remaining courts and departments will follow on a weekly basis.
