Yesterday’s Take Five featured Sandy Rice of Feed My Sheep, who says the local food pantry is bracing for a sharp increase in need as the holiday season approaches. Feed My Sheep serves between 400 and 500 families each month, and Rice says recent cuts to food stamp benefits could push that number even higher. Volunteers are in place for holiday distributions, but the pantry’s shelves are running low. Rice says donations of any non-perishable food items are welcome, especially pasta, pasta sauce, cereal, canned meats, mac and cheese, and boxed meal kits. Monetary donations and processed deer meat from hunters are also accepted. The pantry can even work with farmers willing to donate processed pork or beef. Feed My Sheep distributes food the third Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to noon and the following Thursday from 6–7 p.m. Additional “produce-style” giveaways take place Mondays and Fridays at noon. The pantry serves primarily Daviess County residents but will assist anyone in need. Donations can be dropped off Mondays and Fridays between 9 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. at 601 West Oak Street, or arrangements can be made by calling 812-254-5429. Rice says the community’s support is vital: “Anything anyone can do is greatly appreciated.”
