The Odon Fire Department is speaking out in support of creating a fire district to serve northern Daviess County, saying the move could improve emergency response and public safety in the area. In a lengthy statement, department officials said volunteers from the Odon and Madison Township fire departments have discussed concerns about staffing shortages, ambulance availability and funding challenges. The department said it supports forming a fire district involving the Town of Odon, Madison Township and Van Buren Township rather than the town contracting fire protection services solely through Madison Township. Officials say a fire district would allow all current volunteers to remain involved while providing opportunities for expanded equipment, staffing and emergency medical services. The department also noted that fire districts already operate in other parts of Daviess County. The statement encourages residents to contact local officials, attend meetings and ask questions about the future of fire protection services in the area.
