David L. Matteson

David L. Matteson, 84, of Washington, Indiana passed away Thursday, January 19, 2023 at 9:15 a.m. peacefully with family at his side.

He was born September 6, 1938 in Pike County, Indiana to the late Noble and Nora (McCrary) Matteson.

Dave served two years in United States Army and was stationed in Korea. After returning he worked at McCord Corporation until the plant closed. He will be honored at the graveside by the American Legion.

He was well known for his humor and storytelling. Wherever you saw Dave, he was surrounded by lots of friends. His relationship with the Amish community was very special. He hauled livestock for them to market. Dave had a passion for country music. He was a member of the band “Sundown” and was a singer and played bass guitar. The band was very popular around the area and played at several clubs and entertained at the Turkey Trot.

Dave’s main passion was Appaloosa horses, where he made it a profession and a lifetime business of raising and breeding horses. His business was known around the nation.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Noble and Nora Matteson; sister, Barb Charles; nephew, Kevin Charles.

Dave is survived by his wife of 62 years, Carol Matteson of Washington; sisters, Dorothy Grannan, Sue (Dave) Gingerich, both of Washington; brothers, Joe Matteson and Marty Matteson, both of Washington; and many nieces and nephews. Dave and Carol had no children but claimed Adam (Holly) Robinson and Jordan (Emma) Robinson as their adopted family.

He will be missed by his family and friends. The family would like to thank Helping Hearts Hospice for the exceptional care during his last days.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 24, 2023 at Blake & Wagler Funeral Home in Montgomery, Indiana. Burial will follow in Aikmans Creek Cemetery.

Visitation will be held Monday, January 23, 2023 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Blake & Wagler Funeral Home in Montgomery, Indiana and on Tuesday, January 24, 2023 from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home. Condolences may be made online at www.blakefuneralhomes.com
