Eagle Place Apartments, situated at 510 Church Street in Loogootee, were funded through IHCDA’s HOME Investment Partnership Program. The property offers 20 affordable one- and two-bedroom rental units. It is located just a few blocks away from downtown Loogootee. Originally opened in 1862 as St. John Grade School, the building provided education for grades 1 through 8. In 1923, it expanded to include a four-year program for girls, with boys joining as freshmen in 1949. However, unfortunate fires in 1968 and 1969 destroyed both St. John’s Grade School and Loogootee High School, leading to the consolidation of the two community schools. In 1970, the St. John High School building was leased to Loogootee Community Schools and used as Loogootee Elementary East for grades 4, 5, and 6. After closing in 2010, the building was eventually sold to Hoosier Uplands Economic Development Corporation and transformed into Eagle Place Apartments, which opened in October 2018.
