Slick conditions from early morning snow and black ice led to multiple crashes across the Tri-State on Monday, including a 13-vehicle pileup on U.S. 231 between Huntingburg and Jasper. Authorities say the crash occurred around 5:45 a.m. near Witz Road when a southbound vehicle lost control on the icy roadway, crossing into the northbound lane and colliding with another vehicle. Several other drivers were unable to stop in time and became involved in the chain reaction. The highway was closed for about two hours and reopened around 8:30 a.m. One person was taken to the hospital, though the extent of their injuries has not been released. Indiana State Police Sgt. Todd Ringle reminded drivers that black ice can be deceiving, appearing as wet pavement but creating extremely slick conditions. He urged motorists to slow down, increase following distances, and avoid braking sharply if sliding. Ringle also encouraged Hoosiers to keep winter survival kits in their vehicles, including warm clothing, blankets, food, and water, in case of emergencies.
