Several Republican candidates filed this week at the Daviess County Courthouse to seek local offices, including one new sheriff’s race and one open commissioner seat. Steve Sturgis has filed to run for Daviess County Sheriff, as current Sheriff Gary Allison has reached his term limit and is not eligible to seek re-election. Other candidates filing for re-election include Matt Meredith for County Council District 4, Crystal Ostby for Assessor, Jennifer Welsh for Auditor, Lauren Milton for Clerk, and Michelle Showalter-Guy for Washington Township Trustee. The only open commissioner race is for Daviess County Commissioner District 2, where current Commissioner Nathan Gabhart is not seeking re-election. Tony Duncheon has filed to run for that seat. Duncheon currently serves on the Daviess County Council and has more than 35 years of experience in finance, including 15 years in the coal industry and over two decades in banking in downtown Washington. He says his focus as commissioner would include county roads, property, budgets, contracts, and long-term economic development, housing, and local policy needs. The Primary Election will be held May 5, with the General Election scheduled for November 3.
